When the Australians in general and cricket experts from other parts claim that the Australian domination will continue even after the departure of Warne and McGrath, they are making a mistake.
When McGrath missed two matches in England, England won (by two runs and by 2 wickets respectively) the ashes for the first time in 16 years. When both were absent in 2003-04 (one was injured and the other was serving a ban), India, notorious for its underperformance abroad made hay. Tendulkar and Dravid hit double hundreds, Laxman made two centuries, Sehwag made 195 and Ganguly made his last worthwhile test century. In Sydney India posted 700+, something they have never done before or since, at home or abroad.
The fact is that match winning bowlers are rare and batsmen hog the limelight. We all know what happened to West Indies after the supply of great bowlers dried up. Batsmen cannot win test matches, it’s the bowlers who do so. I would expect the Australian domination in test cricket to end rather fast and the South Africans are probably best placed to take advantage.
